Somewhere beyond the open sea, there is a land

A Finnish tango about a fairyland. It is a dream. And a hope. And a dream of hope. In it, the horizon line is not just a horizon line, and the seashore is no longer just a seashore. It is a vision.

A vision that the world could be better, there beyond the open sea. And there is a land, behind which lies the open sea once again. And yet another new land. Against this backdrop, it is no wonder that a Swedish gallery is hosting some twenty Finnish artists, brought over by the classic 'finlandsfärjan' ferry. Nor is it a wonder that a Finnish gallery in Turku previously hosted artists from Stockholm. Brought by the sea.

However, the content of the Finnish tango is fatefully melancholic. The singer neither flies nor rows nor finds their fairyland, but remains a prisoner of the earth. This was the 1970s. But times change. For twenty years, Stockholm has offered artists from all over the world a place beyond all seas: the artists' own art fair. Supermarket Independent Art Fair saw the light of day in February 2006 as a small-scale mini-fair, but it has since blossomed into a global meeting place where, in the words of the song, the most beautiful flowers cast their glow. Through this, we are all here on the shores of the open sea, always able to set out in pursuit of new wonders on new shores.

The exhibition is supported by the Svenska Kulturfonden.
