Korpo provides time, space and connection: time to step sideways, space to reflect and share ideas with others, and connection to those qualities that directly inspire my work – light, texture, natural landscapes and the people (and creatures) who live and move within them.
During my two summers and one winter at AARK I’ve been carefully observing and developing a number of themes that I think are relevant to the Archipelago – trust, identity, urbanisation, climate and how these realities are shaping the patterns of our lives in meaningful ways. This summer while at AARK I’m aiming to complete my first book of semi-fictional illustrated stories – a collection of familiar but unrelated character portraits through drawings that capture an emotion or an action in sometimes unexpected but always genuine ways. Understated humour and optimism are always just below the surface - more than a little like the local people I’ve encountered on my journeys. I’m hoping these narratives will reveal my own observations of the shared hopes, qualities and fortitude that distinguish the people of these islands.
