View at AARK.

Working & Thinking... surrounded by the rural Archipelago Nature.

AARK - a space to think and time to develop something new!
Voluntary Open Studio and Artist Talks.

We are looking for professional contemporary artists / art professionals from all disciplines for whom nature and the surrounding seaside could be an interesting area to research or theme to work on. We offer a space to think and time to develop a new idea – or to continue on a work in progress.
Our special area is the unique archipelago, with the National Park and biosphere area; frozen seas, light summer nights, rich bird life as well as star nights – AARK has something to offer around the year: outer archipelago or the nearby wild forrest lake, seaside straight outside AARK, passing ships.
AARK can offer a quiet retreat as well a more social setting – depending on the artist’s needs and other art professionals visiting. We can organize a weekly informal meeting in the residency. Travel and working plans, questions, dinners and Sauna … or just having some coffee together.
Our location is by the ferry shore and a small boats dock so there is always some traffic and people around. But still, house and the archipelago can be very silent specially during winter months.
We encourage a dialog inside AARK, between both national and international quests and a dialog with local people and the environment. A residency period is what You make it for! Sometimes just 1 OR about 5 artists at the residency, depending on timing.

The Abstract! exhibition, to open at the Finnish Museum of Photography in November 2017, will celebrate the hundred-year history of photographic abstraction. The exhibition will present a large number of Finnish artists from different periods, and the famous international early abstractionists László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and August Strindberg.

The exhibition is on view November 1st, 2017 – January 14th, 2018.
The main exhibition space is closed during exhibition setup from October 16 to October 31st.

Abstraction, which is popular in today's photographic art, met with strong opposition, especially among photographers, when it was first introduced in the early 20th century – and has done so at regular intervals ever since. It was considered to be pointless and to go against the nature of photography as a medium for recording and representing reality.

Abstraction has also been ignored in Finnish research on photography, even though it has an essential role in the history of the medium. For this reason, the exhibition highlights a number of unsung Finnish photographers, thus proving that the history of Finnish photographic art has more facets than has previously been thought.

The exhibition will feature works by, for example, Vilho Setälä, Erik Blomberg, Eino Mäkinen, Otso Pietinen, a group of photographic artists called Fotograafikot, and contemporary photographers including Marko Vuokola, Timo Kelaranta, Niko Luoma, Ea Vasko and Nanna Hänninen.

The curator of the exhibition is photographer Laura Nissinen, who is writing her dissertation for Aalto University on the subject "Abstraction in Finnish Art Photography".
